What You Need to Know About Same Day Crowns

March 21, 2018

Dental crowns are the perfect permanent solution for weak, broken, cracked, or misshapen teeth. Traditionally, dentists use impression material in an impression tray to take a mold of the tooth/teeth that need a crown and the teeth surrounding it. This impression is then taken to a dental lab for your crown to be created, which may take up to a few weeks. In the meantime, you are fitted for a temporary crown to wear while your permanent one is being made. When the crown is ready, it is fitted to your tooth.

All told, this process could take both weeks and multiple appointments before it is completed. Because the impression mold is subject to errors caused by movement during the casting process, excess saliva, and more, the fitting may not be completely accurate, causing discomfort. At Southtowns Dental, we have the technology to give you the perfect crowns in less than half the time of traditional crowns.

CEREC Procedure in action

Getting CEREC (Ceramic Reconstruction) crowns begins by using a small, handheld camera to scan the tooth that needs the crown and the surrounding teeth. We use the Omnicam camera, a tiny, non-invasive camera, to obtain an image of your teeth. Using 3D imaging, a crown is created to almost exactly fit your tooth, and the best part is that it is created right in the office in just a few minutes. Because it is made of a solid block of ceramic or resin material, these crowns are strong enough to be placed even on your back teeth. You can have a perfectly fitted, natural looking crown in just one 90 minute appointment with minimal discomfort. CEREC crowns provide a permanent, well-fitting solution that can be implemented quickly without having to wear a temporary crown. There is no need to worry about follow up appointments, allergic reactions to the crown material, or damage to your natural tooth surface. You will have a perfect crown for years to come.

CEREC scan

Beyond providing a great dental solution, the CEREC procedure is a great tool for better patient communication. With the Omnicam, the dentist can take detailed, full color videos of your teeth and show them to you, giving you greater insight into your treatment and why you need it. Because the crown itself is also made in-office, you can watch it being made. Physically, this procedure is much more comfortable because there is no need for impression trays or multiple numbing injections. As a patient, you deserve to be well informed of your treatment, and this visibility is designed to set you at ease and to help your dentist communicate with you more effectively.

Southtowns Dental has the experience and dedication to give you and your family the best dental care available. At the same time, we understand that scheduling your busy life around multiple dentist appointments is neither realistic nor convenient, which is why we offer solutions like CEREC that take just over an hour and a single appointment. Call our office today for a free consultation to see if CEREC crowns are the right solution for you.
